Overall, a visit to Shalimar Garden promises a serene experience amidst nature’s beauty.
History of Shalimar Garden
Shalimar Garden, originally named ‘Farah Baksh,’ meaning ‘the delightful,’ was built by Mughal Emperor Jahangir in 1619. This beautiful garden became a symbol of his love for his wife, Nur Jahan, who often accompanied him during their visits to Srinagar. In 1630, Emperor Shah Jahan, who is better known for constructing the Taj Mahal, expanded the garden and renamed it ‘Faiz Baksh,’ which translates to ‘the bountiful.’ During the Sikh and Maharaja periods, the garden served as a favorite retreat for Sikh governors. Notably, the marble pavilion within the garden acted as a guesthouse for European visitors during the rule of Maharaja Ranjit Singh.
As time went on, the significance of Shalimar Garden continued to grow. It was electrified during Maharaja Hari Singh’s reign, adding to its charm and making it even more accessible to visitors. The garden remains an important historical site, not just for its scenic beauty but also for its rich heritage as the imperial summer residence of Jahangir and Nur Jahan, who would travel from Delhi through the stunning Pir Panjal mountain range to enjoy this exquisite escape. Today, Shalimar Bagh stands as a testament to the Mughal era’s artistic vision and remains a beloved attraction in Srinagar, Kashmir.
Architecture of Shalimar Garden
The architecture of Shalimar Garden is as enchanting as its history, inviting visitors to explore its thoughtfully designed terraces, each with its own unique features.
Starting with the First Terrace, known as the Public Garden, it culminates at the Diwan-e-Aam (Public Audience Hall). This area is highlighted by a small black marble throne positioned over a delightful waterfall, where guests could once sit and admire the serene beauty surrounding them.
Next, the Second Terrace is slightly broader and boasts the remnants of the Diwan-e-Khas (Hall of Private Audience) at its center. This once-grand hall, now in ruins, adds a sense of nostalgia to the terrace, which also includes 410 fountains and royal bathrooms located on its north-west boundary. These fountains are ingeniously supplied in succession, originating from the Diwan-e-Khas, the Diwan-e-Aam, and even the Zenana terrace, showcasing the garden’s sophisticated water management system.
Finally, we reach the Third Terrace, known as the Zenana Garden, which is beautifully flanked by majestic chinar trees. It features the impressive Black Pavilion (Baradari), constructed by Shah Jahan. This terrace includes a tranquil fountain pool complete with a double cascade and enchanting chini khanas—arched niches that were originally designed to hold oil lamps for a fairy-tale glow, now repurposed to hold lovely flower pots. The Baradari is also adorned with four stone doors supported by pillars, potentially reclaimed from ancient temples, enhancing its historical significance. Throughout the garden, large water troughs complement the fountains, creating a harmonious balance of nature and artistry, making Shalimar Garden a true masterpiece of Mughal architecture.
