The Route: Why Every Trip Runs Through Delhi

There's no non-stop flight from anywhere in China to Srinagar, and none is likely soon — Kashmir's own airport doesn't carry the long-haul traffic to justify one. The real decision is which Indian city to route through, and for almost every China-based traveller that's New Delhi, which has both the busiest onward schedule to Srinagar of any Indian city and, as of 2026, the strongest direct air links back to China. Those links have improved sharply this year: Air China resumed non-stop Beijing–Delhi flights on 21 April 2026 after a suspension of more than four years, Air India brought back its non-stop Delhi–Shanghai service on 1 February 2026, and China Southern has been expanding Guangzhou–Delhi capacity through the 2026 season. China Eastern also now flies Kunming–Kolkata directly, a useful secondary gateway if you're travelling from Yunnan or elsewhere in China's southwest. If you're departing from Shenzhen, Chengdu or another Chinese city without a confirmed non-stop to Delhi, the practical route is usually a one-stop connection via Guangzhou, Kunming, Hong Kong or a Southeast Asian hub — tell us your home city and travel dates and we'll map the cleanest combination.

Once you land in Delhi, its domestic terminal runs well over a dozen daily flights on to Srinagar across five airlines, so the onward leg rarely needs advance planning beyond a sensible connection time.

Visa Status for Chinese Passport Holders — Read This Before You Book Flights

This is the one piece of information on this page that changes fastest, so treat it as a snapshot rather than a permanent rule, and always let us verify the live position before you commit to airfare. As of this update, India's Embassy in Beijing and its consulates in Shanghai and Guangzhou have confirmed that e-Visa and online-visa issuance for holders of Chinese passports is temporarily suspended, and any e-Visa or online visa already issued under that suspended channel is no longer valid for entry. This followed a period, from July 2025, in which India had resumed regular tourist visa issuance to Chinese nationals for the first time in five years — so the underlying relationship between the two countries has clearly been on a path toward easier travel, even though the fastest online channel is currently paused.

In practical terms, this means a Chinese passport holder wanting to visit Kashmir right now needs to apply for a regular (sticker) tourist visa in person, through the Indian Visa Application Centres in Beijing, Shanghai or Guangzhou, rather than online. Applications typically require your passport with at least six months' validity beyond your planned stay, a completed application form, a digital passport photo, proof of onward travel, and an in-person appointment to submit biometrics — build in real lead time, ideally three to four weeks, since processing at a physical centre takes longer than the e-Visa process ever did. If your situation is time-sensitive, the consulates note that travellers with a compelling reason to visit can contact the Embassy in Beijing or the consulates in Shanghai and Guangzhou directly.

Currency, Connectivity and Money Matters

Indian rupees are what you'll need on the ground — Chinese Yuan isn't something you can spend or easily change once you're in Kashmir itself, so convert either before you fly, at Delhi airport on arrival, or through a licensed money changer in Srinagar. As of September 2026, 1 CNY converts to roughly ₹14.1, though this shifts week to week, so treat any fixed figure as a guide rather than what you'll get on the day. Alipay and WeChat Pay, near-universal across mainland China, have essentially no merchant footprint in Kashmir — even in Srinagar's main markets, expect to pay by cash or an international Visa/Mastercard rather than a Chinese mobile wallet, and carry enough rupees for smaller vendors and taxi counters where cards aren't accepted at all. On connectivity, a Chinese SIM won't roam usefully inside Jammu & Kashmir at reasonable rates, and note that some foreign SIMs and prepaid Indian SIMs bought outside the state face restrictions in J&K — most travellers either pick up a local postpaid SIM on arrival in Srinagar or activate an international eSIM with Indian data before departure, and we cover both options in your pre-departure briefing.

Best Places to Visit on a Kashmir Trip from China

• 1. Srinagar and Dal Lake. This is Day 1/2 and Day 6 of our standard itinerary — arrival and your Dal Lake houseboat night both come included as standard. Kashmir's summer capital sits at about 1,585 m and centres on Dal Lake, where a houseboat night and a sunset Shikara ride tend to be the two things travellers remember most. Round it out with the Mughal Gardens — Nishat Bagh and Shalimar Bagh — and the old city's Jama Masjid. Best visited April to October.
• 2. Gulmarg. About 56 km from Srinagar at 2,650 m, Gulmarg — "Meadow of Flowers" — is home to one of the world's highest cable car systems, climbing to Apharwat Peak at close to 3,980 m. This is Day 3 of our standard itinerary — the Gondola Phase 1 ride is included in every package tier. Winter (December–February) turns it into India's premier ski destination, with pricing and crowds well below China's own major ski resorts, while summer brings one of the highest green golf courses anywhere. Pack proper warm layers regardless of season; the weather turns fast at this altitude.
• 3. Pahalgam. Sitting on the Lidder River about 96 km from Srinagar at 2,130 m, Pahalgam — "Valley of Shepherds" — has long served as the base camp for the Amarnath Yatra. It opens onto Betaab Valley, Aru Valley and Chandanwari, and its pony trails and pine-forest walks make it one of the more relaxed stops on a Kashmir circuit. Best April to June and September to November. This is Day 4 and Day 5 of our standard itinerary, included in every package tier.
• 4. Sonmarg. This is Day 7 of our standard itinerary. Around 80 km from Srinagar at roughly 2,700–2,800 m, Sonmarg — the "Meadow of Gold" — marks the start of the road toward Ladakh over Zoji La. Its main draw, Thajiwas Glacier, is a short pony ride or walk from the main road. The route generally stays open only from May to September before heavy snow closes it, which is why most well-built Kashmir packages schedule it as a single day trip.
• 5. Betaab Valley. Around 15 km from Pahalgam, Betaab Valley takes its name from a Bollywood film shot there. Covered as part of the Day 4 drive in our standard itinerary — no separate booking needed. Thick pine cover and the Lidder River running through it make for an easy, photogenic stop with a modest entry fee, usually paired with Aru Valley and Chandanwari in one day.
• 6. Yusmarg. About 47 km from Srinagar in the Pir Panjal range, Yusmarg sits at roughly 2,400 m and draws a fraction of Gulmarg's or Pahalgam's crowds. Rolling meadows, the Doodh Ganga River and pony trails toward Tosa Maidan make it a good half- or full-day add-on for travellers after a quieter pace. Not on our standard route, but easy to add to any package — just ask when you enquire.
• 7. Doodhpathri. Available as an offbeat add-on, especially popular with our 7N/8D and luxury-tier travellers. In Budgam district, roughly 42 km from Srinagar, Doodhpathri ("Valley of Milk") sits around 2,730 m and takes its name from the milky-white streams flowing over its rocks. Since a China-to-Kashmir trip already involves a long journey either way, many travellers prefer stretching to 8–10 days rather than a quick dash, which leaves comfortable room to build Doodhpathri in as a bonus day.
• 8. Aru Valley. Twelve kilometres from Pahalgam at about 2,414 m, Aru Valley is the starting point for treks to the Kolahoi Glacier and the Tarsar-Marsar lakes, and its meadows also suit shorter horse rides and day hikes. Things to Do on a Kashmir Tour from China

• 1. Shikara Ride and a Houseboat Stay. An evening Shikara ride on Dal Lake is close to essential on any Kashmir trip, drifting past floating gardens and the lake's floating market for roughly ₹600–₹1,200 depending on duration and season. Combine it with at least one night on a Dal or Nigeen Lake houseboat — options range from simple to deluxe, usually with home-cooked Kashmiri meals included. Head out between 6 and 8 AM if you want to catch the floating market at its busiest. The houseboat night and a Shikara ride are both standard inclusions in every package we offer.
• 2. Ride the Gulmarg Gondola. Phase 1 is already built into every package tier; Phase 2 can be added on request. One of the highest cable car systems on earth, it runs from Gulmarg (2,650 m) to Kongdoori on Phase 1 and continues to Apharwat Peak (Phase 2, near 3,980 m) beyond that. As of 2026, Phase 1 tickets run roughly ₹740–₹810 and Phase 2 roughly ₹900–₹1,100 per person, both subject to seasonal pricing and possible weather closures. On a clear day, the top station opens up views toward the Nanga Parbat range — a lower-altitude, more accessible taste of high-Himalaya scenery than a trip to Everest Base Camp or western Sichuan would require.
• 3. Trek Pahalgam, Aru Valley and Betaab Valley. Pahalgam is the trekking hub of the region, with short, clearly marked trails to Aru Valley (12 km) and Betaab Valley (15 km) — both doable in a single day with a guide or pony. Guided sightseeing to these valleys is included in every package; multi-day treks can be arranged as an add-on. More seasoned trekkers can push on from Aru toward the Tarsar-Marsar lakes and the base of Kolahoi Glacier, best attempted June through September.
• 4. River Rafting on the Lidder. The Lidder River at Pahalgam offers grade I–II rapids — gentle enough for beginners and families. Sessions run about 20–30 minutes and cost roughly ₹500–₹800 per person, best done April through September when water levels are more consistent. Available as an optional add-on with any of our Pahalgam-inclusive packages.
• 5. Ski or Snowboard in Gulmarg. Ask us to add ski or snowboard rental into your winter package — it isn't included by default. From December to February, Gulmarg becomes one of India's top winter-sports spots. Even travellers who already ski regularly at resorts in Northeast China or Chongli often come for the novelty of Himalayan terrain and glacier views rather than the skiing itself, and pricing is typically well below China's major ski destinations. Equipment rental and instructor fees generally cost ₹1,500–₹3,000 a day.
• 6. Shop for Pashmina and Saffron. Srinagar's Lal Chowk and the Polo View Market area are the go-to spots for genuine Pashmina shawls, hand-knotted carpets, walnut wood carvings and Kashmiri saffron. Saffron from Pampore, about 16 km from Srinagar, ranks among the best in the world and travels easily in hand luggage — just check current Chinese customs rules for agricultural products before you fly home, since fresh spice imports can face restrictions.
• 7. Walk the Mughal Gardens. Srinagar's terraced, fountain-lined Mughal-era gardens — Nishat Bagh, Shalimar Bagh and Chashme Shahi — date back to the 17th century along Dal Lake's edge. They're at their best in spring (April–May) during tulip season and again in autumn when the chinar trees turn red and gold. Included in the Day 2 Srinagar sightseeing of our standard itinerary.
• 8. Camp Under the Stars in Sonmarg or Doodhpathri. Available as an add-on for travellers extending beyond our standard 7N/8D package. For a slower day, camping near Sonmarg's Thajiwas Glacier or out in Doodhpathri's meadows offers clear night skies and a break from the main sightseeing route. Basic tented setups run May through September, often with bonfire evenings.
