Pune's position matters here in a way it doesn't for most cities: there's currently no non-stop flight between Pune and Srinagar, so every air route runs through either Mumbai or Delhi. What Pune does have, unusually, is a single daily train — the Jhelum Express — that runs the entire distance to Jammu Tawi without a change of train, something most cities this far south can't claim. We weigh both options against your dates before confirming your booking — more on how that plays out below.
| Field | Data Point |
|---|---|
| Air distance (Pune–Srinagar) | ~1,700–1,900 km |
| Road distance | ~2,300–2,400 km (via NH60/NH50 to Nashik/Dhule, onto NH52 and NH44 through Gwalior, Agra, Delhi and Jammu) |
| Flight — non-stop | None. All routes connect via Mumbai or Delhi |
| Flight time via Mumbai | Pune–Mumbai ~1 hr, Mumbai–Srinagar (direct) ~1 hr 30 min–2 hrs; total journey with layover roughly 4–6 hrs |
| Flight time via Delhi | Pune–Delhi ~2 hrs, Delhi–Srinagar ~1 hr 30 min; total journey with layover roughly 5–7 hrs |
| Pune Airport (PNQ) to city | ~8–10 km from Koregaon Park/Camp, 25–40 min; ~25–30 km from Hinjewadi/Wakad, 45–70 min in traffic |
| Train (Pune Jn → Jammu Tawi) | The 11077 Jhelum Express runs Pune Junction to Jammu Tawi directly — no change of train — covering roughly 2,175 km in about 40–41 hours, via Daund, Manmad, Bhusawal, Itarsi, Bhopal, Jhansi, Gwalior, Agra Cantt, Mathura, New Delhi, Ambala, Ludhiana, Jalandhar and Pathankot |
| Jammu Tawi → Srinagar | Vande Bharat Express (26401/26402), covering 269 km via Katra, Reasi and Banihal in well under 5 hours. This full run has operated since early May 2026, since the Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link was completed, and crosses the Chenab Rail Bridge and the Anji Khad cable-stayed bridge |
| Fastest realistic route | Fly via Mumbai (usually the quicker, better-served connection for Pune) |
| Arrival point | Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport (SXR), Indra Gandhi Road, Humhama, Badgam, Srinagar, J&K 190007 |
| Popular destinations | Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonmarg |
| Offbeat destinations | Doodhpathri, Yusmarg, Gurez |
| Signature experiences | Dal Lake Shikara ride, Gulmarg Gondola, a walk through the Mughal Gardens, Lidder River rafting, trekking, winter skiing, paragliding, a Wazwan spread, Pashmina and saffron shopping |
| Local taxi / pony pricing | Pahalgam's taxi union sets fixed rates for Betaab/Aru/Chandanwari sightseeing — roughly ₹3,000–₹5,000 a day depending on the vehicle (Sedan, Innova, Tempo Traveller); these are posted rates, not negotiable. Pony hire toward Baisaran and similar viewpoints runs anywhere from ₹700 to ₹3,700 depending on the point, and inflated quoting is common, so agree the exact stops and total fare before mounting up |
| Packing checklist | Government photo ID, a postpaid SIM (Maharashtra prepaid SIMs, including Pune ones, don't work in J&K), some cash in small notes, heavy woollens for Nov–Mar or light woollens with a rain layer for Apr/Oct |
| Cash and cards | ATMs are dependable in Srinagar city but scarce or unreliable in Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg — withdraw what you'll need before leaving Srinagar. Card payments work at bigger hotels and houseboats but rarely at taxi counters or small eateries; UPI is mostly usable only within Srinagar city |
| Garden entry fees | Set by the J&K Floriculture Department — roughly ₹24–₹30 per person at Nishat Bagh, Shalimar Bagh and Chashme Shahi (higher for foreign visitors); the seasonal Tulip Garden (mid-March to mid-April) charges around ₹100 for adults, ₹50 for children and ₹400 for foreign nationals. Dal Lake and Hazratbal don't charge entry. Prices can shift, so confirm at the gate |
| Permits | None needed for the standard Srinagar–Gulmarg–Pahalgam–Sonmarg loop. The Inner Line Permit is a Ladakh-specific requirement and doesn't apply here. Gurez is the one exception in J&K itself — being close to the Line of Control, it needs prior clearance, usually arranged through local authorities or your tour operator |
| Ideal travel window | Given Pune's own hot, humid summers (April–June often crosses 35–38°C), March–June for cool spring/summer weather in Kashmir is especially popular with Pune travellers, alongside September–November for autumn colour and December–February for snow and Gulmarg skiing |
| Altitude reference | Srinagar 1,585 m · Gulmarg 2,650 m · Pahalgam 2,130 m · Sonmarg ~2,700–2,730 m · Doodhpathri 2,730 m · Betaab Valley 2,393 m · Aru Valley 2,414 m · Chandanwari 3,288 m · Apharwat Peak (Gondola Phase 2 top station) ~3,979 m |

Pune has no non-stop service to Srinagar, so every air itinerary is a two-leg journey through one of two hub cities. The Mumbai route tends to be the smoother of the two for Pune travellers: the Pune–Mumbai hop takes about an hour, and Mumbai runs direct IndiGo and Air India flights to Srinagar of roughly 1 hr 30 min to 2 hours, bringing the total journey — including a reasonable layover — to somewhere around 4 to 6 hours. The Delhi route works too, and is sometimes the only option with seats left in peak season: Pune to Delhi runs about 2 hours, and Delhi to Srinagar non-stop is a further 1 hr 30 minutes or so, putting the door-to-door time at roughly 5 to 7 hours once you account for the connection.
Pune Airport (PNQ) at Lohegaon sits fairly close to the city core — about 8–10 km from Koregaon Park or Camp, typically a 25–40 minute drive outside peak hours. If you're coming from the IT corridors in Hinjewadi or Wakad, budget more like 45–70 minutes given the distance and the traffic those roads regularly see.
| Aspect | Detail |
|---|---|
| Non-stop Pune–Srinagar flight | Not available |
| Connecting via Mumbai | Pune–Mumbai (~1 hr) + Mumbai–Srinagar direct (~1.5–2 hrs); total ~4–6 hrs with layover |
| Connecting via Delhi | Pune–Delhi (~2 hrs) + Delhi–Srinagar direct (~1.5 hrs); total ~5–7 hrs with layover |
| Carriers | IndiGo and Air India operate the Mumbai–Srinagar and Delhi–Srinagar direct legs; several airlines cover the Pune–Mumbai and Pune–Delhi legs |
| Softer-fare months | August through November, once tulip season (Mar–Apr) and the winter peak (Dec–Jan) have passed |
| Which connection to book | The Mumbai route generally has more daily direct Mumbai–Srinagar departures and fills up faster in summer, so we check that first; if seats run out, we fall back to routing you via Delhi |
| Booking tip | Booking the two legs as a single connected itinerary (rather than two separate one-way tickets) protects you if the first flight runs late — we handle this when we book your package |
This is where Pune has a genuine edge over most other cities booking a Kashmir trip: the daily 11077 Jhelum Express runs from Pune Junction all the way to Jammu Tawi without requiring you to change trains in Delhi or anywhere else. It's a long haul — roughly 40 to 41 hours covering close to 2,175 km — but it's a single, continuous journey with Sleeper, AC 3-tier and AC 2-tier options, running via Daund, Manmad, Bhusawal, Itarsi, Bhopal, Jhansi, Gwalior, Agra Cantt, Mathura, New Delhi, Ambala, Ludhiana, Jalandhar and Pathankot before terminating at Jammu Tawi.
| Leg | Train | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Main leg | 11077 Jhelum Express, Pune Jn → Jammu Tawi | Runs daily, roughly 40–41 hours for the full ~2,175 km, no train change required. Sleeper, AC 3-tier and AC 2-tier classes available |
| Jammu Tawi → Srinagar | Vande Bharat Express (26401/26402) | Covers 269 km via Katra, Reasi and Banihal in well under 5 hours, running since early May 2026 following completion of the Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link, crossing the Chenab Rail Bridge — the world's highest railway arch bridge — and the Anji Khad cable-stayed bridge |
| Door-to-door total from Pune | Around 45–46 hours if the Jammu Tawi connection is timed well, best treated as a two-night journey rather than attempted as a single push |
Since the Jhelum Express and the Jammu Tawi–Srinagar Vande Bharat are still two separate services, build in a solid connection window at Jammu Tawi and reconfirm both schedules shortly before travel — this stretch of the network has seen more than one timing revision since the new rail link opened.
| Aspect | Detail |
|---|---|
| Distance | ~2,300–2,400 km from Pune |
| Duration | 38–42+ hours of driving |
| Route | Pune–NH60/NH50 towards Nashik and Dhule–onto NH52/NH3 through Indore or Gwalior–NH44 via Agra, Delhi, Jammu, Udhampur–Srinagar |
| Our take | Not a realistic option for most travellers — this is easily the longest of the three routes out of Pune, typically split across three days with overnight halts. It's included here for completeness only; almost nobody booking with us drives the whole way |
Whether you've connected in via Mumbai, via Delhi, or come down from Jammu Tawi on the Vande Bharat, plan to arrive by early-to-mid afternoon and keep the rest of the day light — rest, let your body adjust, and end with a relaxed sunset Shikara ride on Dal Lake.
Spend the morning at Nishat Bagh and Shalimar Bagh, then explore the old city and Hazratbal Shrine after lunch. Srinagar sits at roughly 1,585 m — a far bigger jump than anything Pune's own near-560 m elevation prepares you for, so an unhurried first couple of days helps you acclimatise before heading higher.
The drive covers about 56 km and takes 1.5–2 hours. At 2,650 m, Gulmarg is well above any altitude Maharashtra sees, so pace yourself for the first hour or two and watch for headache, breathlessness or nausea.
The drive south runs roughly 90–100 km (2.5–3 hours) along the Lidder River, with stops built in at Betaab Valley and Aru Valley.
A pony ride up to Baisaran Valley — often called "Mini Switzerland" — anchors the day. If altitude has been treating you well, add on a half-day excursion to Chandanwari, which sits above 3,200 m.
Return to a night aboard a Dal Lake houseboat. A quiet cup of Kahwa on deck as the lake settles is the ideal way to close the day.
Drive to Sonmarg (roughly 80 km, about 2 hours) to see Thajiwas Glacier and Zero Point, then head back to Srinagar for your onward flight or your Jammu Tawi train connection. If you're flying back via Mumbai or Delhi, budget a 2–3 hour domestic airport buffer plus a comfortable connection window for your onward leg; if you're taking the Vande Bharat back to Jammu Tawi to catch the Jhelum Express, leave extra margin given it's two separate services.
Travelling out of Pune means weighing a real trade-off before you even start: a quicker but connecting flight via Mumbai or Delhi, or the unusually convenient direct Jhelum Express to Jammu Tawi followed by the Vande Bharat into Srinagar — no other city this far south has quite that rail option.
