It doesn't have the obvious headline draw of snow or tulips, but it has something I personally find more satisfying: golden chinar trees lining Srinagar's streets and gardens, the saffron harvest underway in Pampore's fields, noticeably thinner crowds at every major site, and some of the clearest, calmest light of the year for photography. I've been guiding tourists through Kashmir's autumn season since 2012, and it remains the season I most often have to actively talk clients into, simply because it doesn't market itself the way snow or tulips do. Once they've been, almost every one of them tells me it was the right call. This guide walks through exactly why, along with everything else a Malaysian traveller needs to plan an autumn trip properly.
Autumn solves a different problem than the other three seasons. Malaysian travellers searching for an autumn trip are usually after two specific things: genuinely good value, since hotel and houseboat prices ease off from the spring and summer peaks, and a calmer, less crowded experience at gardens and viewpoints that get genuinely busy the rest of the year. The weather is also a comfortable middle ground, cool but rarely harsh, which suits travellers who want neither summer's warmth nor winter's deep cold.
The saffron harvest in Pampore, just outside Srinagar, is a genuine seasonal event that most travellers don't even know exists until we mention it, and seeing the purple crocus fields in bloom during harvest is something few other destinations in the world can offer. Combined with the chinar trees turning deep gold and red across Srinagar's gardens and old city, autumn gives photographers and casual travellers alike a distinctly different colour palette from any other season here.

Most flights from Kuala Lumpur land in Srinagar by early afternoon after a transit in Delhi or Mumbai. Our driver meets you at Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport for the 20 to 30 minute transfer. We keep day one light given the journey length. By evening, we arrange a Shikara ride on Dal Lake roughly 45 minutes before sunset, with autumn's clear skies often giving the best light of the entire year for this particular outing. Dinner is at a halal restaurant near the lake.
Morning starts around 9am with Nishat Bagh and Shalimar Bagh, both lined with mature chinar trees that turn a deep gold and red through October. Naseem Bagh, a historic chinar grove planted centuries ago, is a worthwhile addition specifically in autumn, since it's less visited the rest of the year but genuinely striking once the leaves turn. Afternoon includes Hazratbal Shrine and the old city around Jamia Masjid, with noticeably thinner crowds than spring or summer. Evening allows time for Maghrib prayer before dinner.
We leave Srinagar by 8am. The drive takes around 1.5 to 2 hours. Autumn Gulmarg has a crisp, clear quality with thinning crowds at the gondola, meaning shorter queues than peak season. The meadows have turned a dry gold rather than summer's green, with the first dusting of early snow sometimes visible on the higher peaks by late October. Afternoon allows for photography and a relaxed walk around the base area.
Today's drive runs about 3 hours, passing through Pampore's saffron fields, genuinely worth a stop if your dates align with the October harvest, since the purple crocus blooms are a striking and short-lived sight. We visit Betaab Valley in the late morning and Aru Valley after lunch, both at their most photogenic with autumn's clear light and turning foliage. Dinner features fresh trout where available.
The drive to Sonamarg, around 2.5 hours, follows the Sindh River, with autumn's clear skies giving some of the best visibility of the year along this route. Thajiwas Glacier remains accessible, with the surrounding meadows turned a dry golden-brown. Afternoon is unstructured time before heading back to Srinagar.
Flexible day. If your dates fall within the harvest window, this is the day we dedicate specifically to Pampore's saffron fields, with an early morning visit since harvesting happens at dawn before the flowers wilt in the sun. If your dates are outside the harvest window, this day is better spent shopping or taking a half-day extension to Doodhpathri's quiet autumn meadows. Evening is a farewell dinner featuring a traditional Kashmiri Wazwan.
Enjoy a relaxed morning before transferring to Srinagar Airport. We schedule your airport transfer around three hours before departure to allow sufficient time for Srinagar Airport's security procedures and ensure a smooth journey home.
September brings mild temperatures of around 10–22°C, moderate crowds, and generally clear skies. While the famous chinar trees haven't yet reached their peak colour, it's one of the best months for comfortable sightseeing and landscape photography.
October is, in my view, the finest all-round month to visit Kashmir. Temperatures range between 5–18°C, the chinar trees reach their brilliant shades of gold and red, and the saffron harvest takes place around Pampore. Crowds remain lower than spring and summer, making it the ideal balance of scenery, weather, and value.
November is colder, with temperatures between 0–12°C, but it's also the quietest and best-value month of the season. Some higher-altitude roads may begin closing if early snowfall arrives, although Srinagar, Pahalgam, and many attractions remain accessible.
September is the gentlest introduction to autumn, while October offers the valley at its most colourful. November rewards travellers looking for lower prices and peaceful sightseeing, provided they're comfortable with colder weather and the possibility of limited access to some mountain areas.
There are no direct flights from Kuala Lumpur to Srinagar, so every journey includes at least one transit. The most common routing is via Delhi, usually connecting to Srinagar with Air India or IndiGo. Total travel time is generally around 10 to 13 hours, depending on your layover.
Travelling via Mumbai is another practical option for many travellers, while a Dubai connection with Emirates provides a more comfortable layover but usually increases total journey time to around 14 to 18 hours.
September and October are popular with both Malaysian and international visitors, so we recommend booking flights at least two to three months in advance. November usually offers greater flexibility and sometimes better fares because overall demand is lower.
Although we don't book international flights directly, we're happy to recommend suitable routes and coordinate your airport transfers once you share your preferred travel dates.
Malaysian citizens require an Indian e-Visa to visit Kashmir. The application is completed entirely online through the official Government of India website. We recommend applying two to three weeks before your departure to allow plenty of processing time.

Apply only through indianvisaonline.gov.in. Avoid third-party websites that charge unnecessary "facilitation" fees.
Select the Tourist e-Visa
Choose the Tourist e-Visa category. A 30-day Tourist e-Visa is suitable for most leisure travellers, although longer-duration options are available if required.
Complete the Application Carefully
Enter your passport details, travel dates, and arrival information accurately. Even small errors are one of the most common causes of delays.
Upload the Required Documents
Upload a recent passport-style photograph (JPEG, white background, under 1MB) and a scanned copy of your passport photo page (PDF, under 300KB). Your passport should remain valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates.
Pay the Visa Fee
The government fee generally ranges from USD 25 to USD 80 depending on the visa duration, plus a small bank processing charge of around 2.5%.
Wait for Approval
Most applications are approved within three to five business days. Applying two to three weeks before travel provides a comfortable safety margin.
Carry Your Approved e-Visa
Print a copy of your approved e-Visa and keep a digital copy on your phone to present alongside your passport when arriving in India.
Tourist e-Visas generally cannot be extended after arrival, so apply for a longer-duration visa if you think you'll need additional time. We can provide hotel confirmations and your itinerary to support your application, but we do not process visas ourselves. Always verify the latest requirements and fees on the official Government of India website before applying.
The Indian e-Visa covers Kashmir's main autumn circuit, including Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonamarg, so no additional permits are required for these destinations.
If you plan to extend your trip to destinations such as Gurez Valley or Ladakh's Pangong Lake, Nubra Valley, or Turtuk, foreign nationals require a Protected Area Permit (PAP) or Restricted Area Permit (RAP). These permits are issued through a registered tour operator.

Autumn is arguably the best season to buy Kashmiri saffron because you're visiting during or immediately after the harvest, when the freshest stock is available directly from sellers around Pampore.
Genuine Kashmiri saffron has a rich aroma and a slightly bitter taste rather than a sweet flavour. Buying from established shops instead of roadside stalls greatly reduces the chance of purchasing adulterated saffron.
Pashmina shawls remain one of Kashmir's finest souvenirs, although quality varies considerably. Authentic pashmina feels exceptionally soft without being slippery like synthetic fabric.
Autumn is also an excellent time to purchase fresh walnuts, almonds, and other dry fruits, all of which are easy to carry home. Prices are generally negotiable, and visiting two or three reputable shops before buying gives you a much better sense of fair local pricing.

Driving times remain generally reliable during autumn's dry weather. Srinagar to Gulmarg takes around 1.5 hours, while Srinagar to Pahalgam usually takes about 3 hours. During late November, however, early snowfall can occasionally begin affecting some higher-altitude routes.
SIM Cards: Airtel and Jio counters are available at Srinagar Airport arrivals. Mobile coverage is excellent in Srinagar and Gulmarg, good in Pahalgam and Sonamarg, and more limited in Doodhpathri, Pampore's outer saffron fields, and remote valleys. We recommend downloading offline maps before day trips into rural areas.
Wi-Fi: Reliable Wi-Fi is available in the hotels we work with. Houseboats also offer internet access, although speeds can vary depending on network conditions around Dal Lake.
Currency: India's currency is the Indian Rupee (INR). Cash is still useful for local markets, smaller shops, and especially for purchasing fresh saffron directly from Pampore-area sellers. Most travellers receive a better exchange rate by converting Malaysian Ringgit before leaving Malaysia rather than after arriving in Srinagar.
Visit Pampore's saffron fields early in the morning if your travel dates coincide with the harvest. Saffron flowers are picked shortly after sunrise before the day's warmth causes them to wilt, and the soft morning light is also ideal for photography.
Confirm the expected chinar colour change and saffron harvest dates with us before booking flights. Like the spring tulip bloom, both shift slightly from year to year depending on weather conditions.
Autumn provides some of Kashmir's clearest skies, making it one of the best seasons for photography. Even so, the hour after sunrise and the hour before sunset produce the richest colours on the golden chinar trees.
Book Gulmarg Gondola tickets in advance. Although queues are much shorter than during peak winter, weekends and public holidays still attract plenty of visitors.
Carry a light-to-medium jacket for evenings, as temperatures drop noticeably after sunset even during September and October.
If you're travelling during late November, check road conditions to Sonamarg and Doodhpathri before departure, as the season's first snowfall can occasionally affect access.
As throughout Kashmir, always agree on the price with pony owners or Shikara operators before the activity begins to avoid misunderstandings later.

Based on our day-to-day experience operating tours throughout Kashmir, we consider it a safe destination for international visitors, including Malaysian families, couples, and solo travellers. That said, we believe it's better to discuss safety honestly than dismiss genuine concerns.
On the April 2025 incident: In April 2025, a terrorist attack in Pahalgam tragically killed 26 people, most of them tourists, and understandably affected confidence in travel to the region. Since then, security around major tourist destinations has been visibly strengthened, and tourism has steadily recovered. Around the anniversary in April 2026, Malaysian tour leader Mohammad Fadli brought a group of 21 Malaysian travellers to Pahalgam and later shared that his group felt safe and comfortable throughout their visit. We mention this as one recent, real-world example—not as a guarantee.
On the Gulmarg Gondola: The gondola was temporarily closed from 25 May to 25 June 2026 following a technical fault that left passengers stranded and required a multi-agency rescue operation. It resumed normal service after repairs were certified by the manufacturer. For this reason, we always verify current operating status before planning your sightseeing rather than assuming any attraction will definitely be open.
During late autumn, road conditions depend largely on when the season's first snowfall arrives. We monitor road status daily for November departures and adjust itineraries whenever necessary instead of taking unnecessary risks on mountain roads.
We strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance that includes emergency medical evacuation and always encourage travellers to review the latest government travel advisories before confirming their trip.
